This one time, when she almost slipped "dad" instead of "David", left her completely petrified. Balancing on the very tip of her tongue, time and heartbeat still and thick, the word was too close to tumble off like a lone bright spark that would have ignited the fire of her shame in a blink.

She caught it.

And that was the time Lora Shepard finally accepted and embraced her deep, fiery love for David Anderson.

Their talk was dead for couple of moments, tho. Luckily, he wasn't very surprised by her abrupt silence - like he already waited long enough for her to froze, shake her head and drop on the bunk, speechless. They were having this argument for quite some time now, you know, and there she was, in her prison cell, finally letting all her anger and despair out, breaking, giving in, tired and weary. She lost five pounds in the weeks passed since the accident, and with that her temper was gone too.

Maybe that's why she wasn't really watching her tongue, she thought bitterly.

Still, that had nothing to do with how she looked up to him, what she really felt: admiration, respect, love. He was always so... right. When she was wrong, would she ever lost her footing - he somehow was there everytime to catch and drag her back on her feet. She had a brief thought that she never felt the same way with Hackett, despite him being a close family friend as long as she could remember.

"That's the difference 'tween soldiers and their generals", she mused, rubbing her nose. In the deepest depths of his very soul Anderson was the most solid soldier she ever knew, and it never mattered, what uniform he was clad in for the time being.

As was she.

"Hey, child". The bunk gave in under his weight, next moment his warm arm was around her shoulders. "Get a grip. We'll see you through this, I promise".

Too soon for a once dead veteran in her mid-thirties, Lora found her head on his chest, desperately choking on the calm rhythm of his heart, like a hungry cub with milk all over its face.

"No shit, sir", she murmured, hugging him tightly. "Never doubted that".
